Biomuseo is a museum focused on the natural history of Panama, whose isthmus was formed very recently in geologic time, with major impact on the ecology of the Western Hemisphere. Panama’s Biomuseo is a testament to both the country’s progress, and the intimate connection with nature that Panama has, and wants to show the world. Although the shape of the building of BioMuseo remind everyone with the earlier work of Gehry – such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles – BioMuseo color does look beautiful in the eyes. Panama features an amazing biodiversity and has one of the highest concentrations of species. The actual exhibition design was created by Bruce Mau from Canada to produce sensory impacts. The Biomuseo tells the spectacular story of how the emergence of the isthmus of Panama changed the natural order of our planet. The BioMuseo, the result of a collaborative effort between the Smithsonian Institution, the Amador Foundation of Panama and the Panama City Council, was held at the Amador Causeway. This is Gehry’s first building in Latin America, complimenting an already famed design career which includes masterpieces such as the Guggenheims in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Bilbao, the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, and the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis. Each gallery is meant to educate visitors on very specific aspects of Panama’s natural habitat, as well as the relationship they have with human development and local culture.
